Healthcare is a rapidly growing field in the United States, and SDHS and the Southeastern Indiana Career Center are working together to prepare SD graduates for jobs in the sector.

Lacey Horn is an SDHS senior, and a member of the CNA class at the Career Center.  She was selected as class representative at the Career Center, as well as serving as a student adviser to the administration.  Shayna Wood is the other SD student in the class of 2018 enrolled in the CNA (certified nursing assistant) program.  Along with the CNA title, they were also certified as home health aides, as well as CPR.

Lacey explains that the 2 year program prepared her to take the State CNA Exam, and after passing that last month, she is now certified to work as a nursing assistant.  Her happiest moments in the program involved having fun with friends like Shayna, but also working with the dementia patients in her clinical experiences.  She said, “I really enjoyed working with older people.  They’re always in a good mood and easy to get along with.”  Her most stressful experience in the program was preparing for the state exam.  It involves 72 skills that each candidate must be proficient in, and there is a relatively short period of time to prepare.  Lacey utilized the study guide provided to her as well as making flash cards on her own for extra practice.

Currently, Lacey is already using her education working as a CNA at The Waters in Dillsboro, and she plans to continue her career studying nursing at Ivy Tech.  She encourages other students who are interested in health care careers to check out the program.
